SATURDAY 28th DECEMBER 2019

The Leicester Transport Heritage Trust is having a special event on Saturday 28 December to commemorate the 40th anniversary of Midland Red withdrawing their last D9s from regular service on 31st December 1979.

The event will be centred at Stoneygate Tram Depot in Leicester which will be open from 10 am to 3 pm. There will be various Midland Red related displays (including Roy Finney’s stunning Midland Red model display) plus, hopefully, a couple of surprises.  There will be LTHT and Davideo sales stands in attendance and hot drinks will also be on sale.

The Tram Depot, which is located near to the Racecourse Roundabout at 453 London Road Leicester LE2 3JW, is easily reached by public transport from the Haymarket Bus Station in the city centre by Arriva services 31/31A which operate every 20 minutes and which also serve Leicester Railway Station.

Preserved D9s 5399 and 5424 are due to attend, subject to availability, and will operate a number of free services.

Trust Director Mike Greenwood, who is putting the event together, said “We are very grateful to the Transport Museum Wythall and Roger Burdett for agreeing to provide their D9s to our event especially given the time of year. We are keeping our fingers crossed that the white stuff stays away because that could mean that the buses cannot get to us but we will be opening the Tram Depot for visitors whatever the weather!”

Those planning to visit by car need to be aware that car parking is not available at the Tram Depot but there are a number of side streets close-by although the London Road end of Glebe Road (SatNav – LE2 2LD), which is on the opposite side of the road to the Tram Depot, is the one recommended.

There is a event page below with further information when known.
